Here’s my 2 cents on the Ending of How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM)

Ever since I was young I have loved watching TV series, movies and other dramas. As I reached adulthood, living alone and working all day can take a toll on you and that’s why I have appreciated TV shows a lot more.

So to kick off my TV review blog, I’ll be reviewing a popular show called “How I Met Your Mother”. To anyone who haven’t heard about this show and would want to watch in the future, or if you’re currently in the middle of the series, a SPOILER alert is issued. I will be talking about the show based on the following factors: Beginning, Plot/Storyline, Characters, Climax/Conflict and Ending. Should there be other items that are needed to be discussed; I will add an additional paragraph before the end of the review. I won’t list this one in so I’ll be summarizing it as we go along.

Let’s get started!

Honestly I’ve heard of the title way before I watched this show back in 2015. I was in elementary school when it aired in 2005, and I thought it was an adult series. And coming from a sort of conservative upbringing, I passed on those moments that I would see it playing in TV. Fast forward to 10 years, the pilot episode was amazing. I could understand the characters behavior on the want to live life as they were young adults (which I’m going through as of the moment) and I sympathize with the main character who is a hopeless romantic trying to find love. The first episode was funny, catchy and once you started watching, you’d definitely want to watch the next episode afterwards.

Let’s dive in to characters, as mentioned; the main guy narrating the entire story is a hopeless romantic. The beginning was set in a time in the future where he would be talking to his children about his adventures and experiences early on his life and leading to the story on how he met their mother. Ted was the focus of the story. He is an architect who wants to succeed on his job and he is best friends with a couple who he met to college. One was Marshall, a law student who wants to become an environmental lawyer who was also Ted’s college roommate and Lily, a frustrated artist now working as a kindergarten teacher. The first episode mainly explains how he met their other friend, who happens to develop a love triangle within the group, Robin. Ted hearing the news that Marshall and Lily got engaged, he then developed a want to settle down. He then meets Robin while playing a game called “have you met ted” (I can hear this sentence XD) invented by his very wacky, scheming, funny and downright ladies’ man who always wears suits, Barney.

(L-R) Barney, Robin, Ted, Lily, Marshall

The rest of the show’s episodes revolve around these five friends, going through adulthood, career changes, money problems, relationships and family. Don’t forget to mention, Barney’s ridiculously insane moments where he would sleep with different women every night as they hang out in their spot in the bar or Ted and Marshalls’ apartment.

The story line was a bit similar to a hit TV show in the 90’s called Friends. I have watched HIMYM first, then Friends afterwards, and I can say that both shows have sculpted their story progression through young adulthood, discovering life, passion and romance on the way. I can go on and on how great this show is and how I enjoyed watching every episode. But my 2 cents have to go to my opinion on the climax and the ending.

Love triangle. This was introduced in the middle of the series when Robin and Barney hooked up one night and they felt very terrible since Ted was Robin’s ex-boyfriend and Barney was his “best friend”. Breaking the bro code, both decided not to pursue anything with this new found attraction. A few more episodes, we learn that Ted is okay with Robin and Barney and they date. Ted moves on. Robin and Barney make up and break up.

Ted: Do you love me? Robin: No.

Last couple of seasons, Ted realizes he still loves Robin and Robin saying she doesn’t feel the same way.

The last page of the playbook: The Robin

Robin and Barney eventually realize that they have feelings for each other and they got married.

What I don’t understand about the writers’ point of view is why make Robin & Barney get married, focus on it for an entire season and end up divorcing them just so that Robin and Ted can be together.

The show should be called How I Met Robin and forced my kids to listen to a story on how I met their mother but I still want to be with Robin.

Seriously, No. The first time I watched the series. I was happy because if you’re meant to be you’re meant to be.

Watching is a second time was heartbreaking. Why would you kill their mother? It took 10 years to find her and you introduce her and kill her in an episode? No.

This is why you should always have a back up ending. If they didn’t just adjust the end to fit their proposed ending since the start, I would say that Robin and Barney were happy. Ted found Tracy and Marshall and Lily would still make Thanksgiving at their house with the entire gang together.

Lastly, I have to talk about Victoria. I liked her. She went to Germany, long distance thing and then broke her engagement to be with Ted! She should have been mother. She could have been reintroduced when Robin and Barney got married. She was the perfect fit because she waited. She was a match since season 1.

I really hope you get her someday Ted.

But we can’t change the ending though, we can only get the lessons we learn from the show.

Never give up on your career, your passion, your friendship and your relationship. Always know that time will come and you will get your happy ending.

And if the audience doesn’t like it, there’s always an alternate ending ;) Yeah. Talking about you Writers.

That’s my 2 cents in HIMYM. Thanks for reading.
